SCENE 1: The Labyrinth[]
INT. TUNNELS
Flat, echoing sound. Dry. Maybe the slight hint of a ventilation system or wind.
SKETCHY:
WOW that first step really is a doozy, huh? Every limb still there? Good. Good. Readjust your headset please? It’s powered by dermal electro-conduction which is a really cool way of saying make sure the sticky bits need to be sticky. Signal is…not great but I’ve got you. Now, hold the map up please? (laughs) I knew it! I knew there were tunnels down there! . Some people say they’re from before, like, BEFORE. Before White Barrow fell, before White Barrow existed, even! Okay WE are coming BACK here! But first let’s get you safe, and then let’s get you home. Touch the button on the right side of the headset. Yeah- there’s the light! Look around. Wow. This is NICE! I mean, for a tunnel, but still.
FX: Something large, possibly four legged and angry rolling down the chute behind the player.
Oh no, no no that is a game of catch you do NOT want to play! GO!
SCENE 2: Queen of the Road[]
INT. TUNNELS
Flat, echoing sound. Dry. As the scene progresses, we hear the wardogs in the background.
SKETCHY:
Okay I’m working on tracking the power systems in those dogs. Poor little murder tanks. Not there yet but I’m close. You doing okay? Hey, when was the last time you ate anything? Liquid Gold could have at least slipped you an apple or something. --hang on, check your map. Okay, see the little red O at every fork? Those should be the supply caches. Hopefully they’re updated regularly.
VAGABOND:
Of course they are.
SKETCHY:
OH FOR- Who IS that?! You scared the life out of me.
VAGABOND: FX: Crunches an apple
That’s interesting. Your friend in front of me is in danger, but you’re frightened? That’s what they used to call empathy. Or obsessiveness. I forget. Anyway, hello!
SKETCHY:
Who are you? What do you want with our friend?
VAGABOND:
‘Our’. Empathy. Not obsessiveness. Impressive,
Sketchy.
I’m a fellow traveller. A vagabond.
SKETCHY:
…are you *A* vagabond or THE Vagabond? The mysterious traveler and agent of chaos that, last I heard, Mr N owed like 40 life debts to?
VAGABOND:
Oh the second option sounds VERY cool. And it’s fifty.
SKETCHY:
How did you know my name?
VAGABOND:
Magic.
(BEAT).
SKETCHY:
How exciting.. Now, could you magic up some food and water and the right way to Coyote Skull?
VAGABOND:
How else would I maintain my reputation as a miracle worker? Take this water, filled it myself, it’s clean. And I’m afraid we have a detour to take. The direct route to Coyote Skull has been collapsed. The engineers at New Alice Springs had me looking at it to see if it was an accident or sabotage.
SKETCHY:
Which was it?
VAGABOND:
Which would scare you less?
SKETCHY
Legend wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a big coat (Exasperated sigh). Cool, give the nice Vagabond a handshake and a thank you good bye.
VAGABOND:
I’m heading towards Coyote Skull anyway. Let’s go together
SKETCHY:
Yeah I don’t think that’s the safest idea, but--
SFX- Wardogs. Not distant enough.
VAGABOND:
How about we take a walk? Away from them?
SKETCHY:
Smartest thing you’ve said so far.
Let’s move.
SCENE 3: On the Run With A Legend[]
INT. TUNNELS
Flat, echoing sound. Dry. As the scene progresses, we hear the wardogs in the background.
SKETCHY:
(static cutting into Sketchy and Jaxon’s dialogue)
Getting really spotty signal here, Kettlemine. I can’t tell if you’re still being followed.
VAGABOND:
Oh we are but I don’t think they’re
gaining on us.
FX- Door opens and shuts on Sketchy’s end. Sketchy switches to speakers
JAXON:
Is it true? The ---- Vagabond is with the survivor?!
SKETCHY:
Jaxon! Yes and ---- both hear you. Well, kind of. What’s----------- deal?
JAXON:
The Vagabond is ----! I hear she mapped all ---- the Dustland up to White Barrow.
SKETCHY:
That’s impossible. There----------------- many!
VAGABOND:
Hello! Who are you?
JAXON: My ----is Jaxon, it’s an honor to meet you.
VAGABOND:
Jaxon. Huh. Familiar name. Polite too. I like that. Sketchy, you could take notes.
JAXON:
You ----weren’t polite? TO THE VAGABOND?!
SKETCHY:
Hey! This isn’t easy! They’ve got Actaeon on their trail and there was this whole thing with a chute ---- of the people our Dustcap has encountered has meant them harm. I went----- with the odds, Jax!.I ----about to lose----------------- going deeper. Dustcap? Are ---? Vagabond? (cuts out entirely)
VAGABOND:
Seems we’ve lost them entirely. It’s just you and me now, Dustcap.
FX: Cyberdogs. Closer. When they howl, we can hear Actaeon howl with them and laugh.
Briskly. Left at the next split. I’m going to start removing the lights from the caches we go by. That’ll help cover our tracks. You in front, I’ll keep up.
SCENE 4: Two Roads Diverge[]
INT. TUNNELS
Flat, echoing sound. Constant howling and woofing and dog noises. All slightly robotic.
VAGABOND:
There, I think we lost them. They don’t know these tunnels like I do. So, before we go on, let’s take a moment. Besides (chuckles) my feet hurt. (Pauses) I know you know what you’re carrying. I know Percy was deeply unfair in giving it to you and I know (sighs) he’ll have good excuses for why. But you may not know what that device is going to do. Change. Everything. The largest supply of water in the Dustlands is the ocean. Not the aquifers, not anything Peregrine owns. The ocean. But of course we can’t use it. Once that desalinator is activated, we can use it all. A limitless supply of freshwater. Percy worked out a way to save the future and his arrogance cast you your present and destroyed the town that could, and will, be the place the future is reborn. . I’m truly sorry for what happened to you but I know why Sketchy trusts you and I do too. You’re going to change the world. I’m going to help. (CLAPS HANDS) Now. A lesson. See these markings on the walls? They indicate the directions. Sun for south, snowflake for north, water for east, this weird diamond shape for wes-GET BACK!
FX: Sound of falling rocks. Wardogs howling above the characters
FX: One cyberdog in particular gets louder and louder throughout this scene until ACTAEON snaps. This is KING. KING is always the first dog in, he is a VERY GOOD BOY and we’ll be meeting him again later.
ACTAEON:
(JOYOUS)
The traitor?! I have trained my hounds well. You, Kettlemine, are coming with me. (PAUSE) YOU. Your fate is in my hands.
VAGABOND:
Actaeon. Do you know what happened to your namesake in myth?
ACTAEON:
You can tell me on the way home to face JUSTICE.
N
FX: KING gets louder and louder.
FX: ACTAEON backhands the dog and he whines.
ENOUGH! (Collects self). YOU. KETTLEMINE. This is your last chance. THE. BOX.
VAGABOND:
(Whispering) Left hand on the wall. All the way. You’ll be fine.
(To ACTAEON)
You want to bring me in? Face what Kemmer thinks is justice?
ACTAEON:
No I just want to kill you.
VAGABOND:
Have to catch me first!
SFX- Running feet. Wardogs barking
SCENE 5: Home’s Edge[]
INT. TUNNELS More tunnels! But a little airier, suggesting that we’re getting to a cavern or maybe…daylight?
SKETCHY:
Fx: Static. SKETCHY jumps back into audibility.
WELCOME BACK!! I lost track of the Vagabond when they led the pack away. They’ll be okay…They’re always okay. Can you shine the light on your map?. Okay, interesting. That path looks like it ends at a cave in the Glass Hills that’s right above Coyote Skull. You’re almost home, Dustcap! I’ve sent Jaxon out to bring you in. No one knows the hills like Jax.
JAXON:
Take it easy, hard part’s almost over!
SKETCHY:
Oh no, Jax. Why did you say it like that?
THE END
