Introduction[]

SKETCHY:

Hello listeners. Sketchy Galore here with a quick heads up about this episode. You’re going to hear some discussion of what to do about the wardogs chasing our heroes. We do understand the harming of animals is something that some people simply cannot deal with. So in order to save you undue stress or distraction during your run, I will tell you now that no dogs are killed in this episode. They are all in fact, the goodest boys. 14 out of 10.

Now, go warm up, Dustcap! Time to move!

(clears throat)

SCENE 1: Back in the Cave[]

INT. TUNNELS

Tunnels. Chaotic noises in the background.

Wardogs. Shouts. Buzzards. JAXON is wincing and gasping.

FX: Shouts and wardogs get closer

FX: Shrieking of metal as Jaxon and the Dustcap push a door closed.

FX: Fabric being tightened

JAXON:

(GRUNTS IN PAIN) Okay…that’s gonna hold them for…OW. *OW*

SKETCHY:

Give me an update, folks.

JAXON:

Door is jammed, they are right outside. Kettlemine is banged up but okay and I’m trapped in a cave with a deep cut in my leg that’s bound to get infected but I won’t live that long because robot wolves are coming to kill me. Then the vultures will eat me. It’s been quite a week, Sketch.

SKETCHY:

It’s Tuesday, Jaxon. Shake it off.

JAXON:

I can’t even stand!! Look, Kettlemine, go save y

FX: baton pounding, glass breaking

JAXON (CONT'D):

They aren’t listening to me.

SKETCHY: (low)

Shocking

(clears throat)

So what are they doing?

JAXON:

They’re making the hole on the cliff face larger and pulling out that white tin from my mo-WOAH! Don’t climb out the hole! Not even I’d do that!

SKETCHY:

FX: Science noises. Sound of points on glass. Subtle but grating.

Jaxon, your mother is a very scary lady and I’m perennially delighted she’s on our side. She got Mr N to leave us NEEDLEGLOVES! These things are cool! Nano-tech needles on the palms, 100% traction on any surface. Just don’t play catch with them. Or touch anyone. Get a route down and bring Jaxon or lead the dogs past him, whatever you can do. And make it quick. Wolves are literally at the door. (realizes)Yeah. WOW that was fast.

JAXON:

They’re good dogs, Sketchy. I’m…I’m not going to get to see the ocean am I?

SKETCHY:

Sure you are! Because your mother will CHASE us BOTH there if you die! So don’t die. I don’t like to run.

(Beat)

Besides, when you don’t die, and we go to the ocean anyway, I’ll buy you an ice cream.

JAXON:

What’s an ice cream?

SKETCHY:

Oh honey. (YOU CAN TELL THEY WANT TO RUFFLE HIS HAIR SO BADLY AT THIS POINT)

FX: Wardogs pounding on the door.

JAXON:

(He’s absolutely panicking Breathing accelerating.)

AKTAION: (From behind door)

FX: Pounds on door between each word.

GIVE! ME! THE! BOX!

SKETCHY:

Jaxon, you’re going into shock,

JAXON:

GOT MY REASONS, SKETCH!

SKETCHY:

(Knows everything he’s about to go through is terrifying) I know, buddy. We’re going to get you out but first I’m going to need you to become a shadow, okay? Lie flat, head lamp off. I know this is gross, but if the vultures are in here, so is their dung. Smear it on you. Not your face. It’ll burn.

JAXON:

Sketchy?

SKETCHY:

What, Jaxon?

JAXON: (Close to tears. This is getting REAL) I don’t want to die.

SKETCHY:

(This is HARD. They are fighting every urge to not go up the hill and drag him down themselves.) You won’t. Listen to my voice, Jaxon. There is no uncertainty. There is no doubt. You are going to live.

JAXON:

Oka

FX: As the door opens and the dogs come in barking. JAXON sobs. Goes silent.

SKETCHY: (Voice shaky)

(deep, staggered breath).

Talk to me Dustcap, at the top yet? Good.cCan you train your light up

FX: crunching sound as foothold gives way

Whoa! I’m glad you caught yourself there! Sorry to unbalance you. The gloves are great but the cliffs, well…we didn’t keep the receipt I’m afraid. Be careful, don’t lose your grip, take it nice and easy.

(Under their breath)

...PLEASE

Jaxon?

JAXON:

(Whispering)

They…went straight over me... They couldn’t smell me. I’m…(overcome) I think. I’m okay

SKETCHY:

(Fierce) Good job, Jaxon. Dustcap, Almost at the top, right hand up and-Oh no! Oh no! Push up, now! Don’t

FX: Crashing sound as glass breaks, Dustcap begins to fall. ANDREA:

Gotcha!

SCENE 2: A Matter of Perspective[]

EXT. TOP OF THE GLASS HILLS

Wind. Glass clinking noises. Like an angry, derelict wine party. Sense of desolation

ANDREA: (straining)

AAAAAND There you go! Up and safe.

SKETCHY:

(Head in hands, breathing hard, HATES THEIR JOB SO MUCH SOMETIMES) Tell her thank you and that you don’t have the item anymore. And get away from the edge

before you do.

ANDREA:

Look..We got off on a bad footing (laughs) seems to be a motif. (deadly serious) but you have to listen to me now. While this doesn’t justify our actions, I wanted to explain. Peregrine is...in trouble. The water we do have is drying up at the source. When we heard about Kettlemine’s desalinator plans, and Lord Ingram’s plan to keep them to himself, well, we had to get drastic. You would have done the same thing.

SKETCHY:

Jaxon could be bleeding out. Tell her to get to the point!

ANDREA:

Anyway, I don’t care about the desalinator anymore. Or I do, but Coyote Skull is easier to deal with than Kettlemine was. But--i love animals. And those wardogs need help. Rescue. Like you. Help me save them. I’ll help you save your friend. And no, I’m afraid you don’t have a choice.

(Beat)

Shall we?

SCENE 3: 2 Rescues, 1 Mission[]

EXT. TOP OF THE GLASS HILLS

Wind. Glass clinking noises. Like an angry, derelict wine party. Sense of desolation

SKETCHY:

I don’t even know who to trust anymore, all I know is you need to get to Jaxon, now.

JAXON:

Sketchy, I’m fi...

SKETCHY:

No you’re not. Your heart rate is way down.

JAXON:

I’ve got an easy ten minutes before I go into shock. Probably.

SKETCHY:

Dustcap, the pirates have had trouble getting their dogs to pay attention to Jaxon’s scent. Even with all the blood. The vultures have a…let;s call it musk? Theu’re somewhere in the tunnels and I can’t track them. Go slow, go careful.

ANDREA:

Oh the dogs could smell your friend they just didn’t want to eat him.. They’re fighting their programming. I KNEW they could. That’s why we’re going to rescue them.

SKETCHY:

And Jaxon?

ANDREA:

Does he have a wet nose and a wagging tail?

SKETCHY:

Depends on the day.

ANDREA (Snorts)

Keep this one. Dustcap. I like them. I’m going for the dogs. You go for your friend.

JAXON

Sketch, she’s right. We need to deal with this. Get the Dustcap home…save the day…pet the…doggos…

FX: Barking. CLOSE.

AKTAION: AT LAST!

SKETCHY:

Dustcap! Weird dog lady! Get going!

SCENE 4: You Dropped This, King[]

INT. TOP OF THE GLASS HILLS

Back in the vulture cave.

FX: Vultures are still awake and restless, hissing and clicking, gets louder through the scene.

SKETCHY:

Back to the Vulture cave. The musk will protect you from the wardogs at least…That is not a sentence I ever expected to have to say.

AKTAION:

Aktaion to Kemmer. Tell Doctor Rao to prepare. I’m close.

SKETCHY:

Hide!

ANDREA: (calls out)

Closer than you think.

SKETCHY:

HOW IS THIS A PLAN?!

ANDREA:

Hello Aktaion. I don’t think this Dustcap has what you need.

AKTAION:

Then you’re as useless as these curs!

FX: Dogs whine

Bring me the Dustcap. My pack missed their meal in the tunnels. They need fresh meat.

ANDREA (Totally ignoring them)

You are good dogs, yes you are. Yes.

FX: Happy snuffling noises of dogs being shown love. Terrifying dogs. Partially cybernetic dogs.

ANDREA (CONT'D)

And you! You remember me from New Alice Springs?! Oh you’re a GOOD boy. You look like a King.

AKTAION

They receive names when they have succeeded. He has failed.

FX: AKTAION hits KING. Sad wardog sounds.

ANDREA

What a rude man. Isn’t he rude, King?

FX: Same sad wardog sound. Vultures hissing louder

AKTAION

I’ll deal with you later. Now…THERE YOU ARE

FX: Footsteps

You’re Jaxon.

JAXON

(Breathing heavily)

I’m…a medic. I..get…parley…

AKTAION

(Close to him, quiet, intense, like sliding a knife in slow.)

We’re not at war.

SFX: Gun cocks. Loud. Precise. Shocking. Especially as this is the first gun we’ve encountered.

AKTAION:

Kettlemine. You have until I count to ten. Then I will murder your friend. Eight.

SKETCHY:

NO!

AKTAION:

Nine…TE

ANDREA:

NOW!

FX: King growls. Leaps. Meaty sound of wardog tooth on wrist meat.

FX: Aktaion screams.

FX: Aktaion and King fight.

AKTAION:

I WILL DEAL WITH YOU LATER, CUR! And you, Dustcap! You dare hurl this…bloody…rag…oh NO

FX: Hisses and clicks as the vultures circle.

The dogs bark but back away.

ANDREA: (Not concerned at all)

VERY good, Dustcap! These vultures are a cross breed, carnivorous, predatory. LOVE the smell of blood. Especially on nice. Big. OPEN wounds. Let’s leave them to it shall we? Be seeing you.

AKTAION:

(panicked)

HELP ME! MY HOUNDS! TO ME!

(Screams and hisses and clicks to fade out)

SCENE 5: The Start of a Beautiful Friendship[]

EXT. OUTSKIRTS OF COYOTE SKULL

Crunching of glass under foot. Wind. Vultures in the distance. JAXON is limping. Maybe fade up town noises as the scene goes on.

SKETCHY

(Cuted out and finally letting themselves feel the emotion)

They really are good dogs.

JAXON

(weakly)

Did Kettlemine make it?

SKETCHY

They did, buddy. Good job. Don’t EVER do it again.

JAXON

(laughs weakly) There you are. Where’s Aktaion?

SKETCHY

Fighting for their life under a pile of vultures. My money’s on the vultures but we’ll send someone to check on them anyway. As for Andrea, she just wanted dogs…Can’t blame her.

JAXON

We have a ton of feral dogs around Coyote Skull. Why does she need those?

SKETCHY:

How about you ask her when you’re somewhere blood hungry birds and an angry pirate aren’t?

JAXON:

(chuckles)

OW.

SKETCHY:

I think the Dustcap has earned a rest as well. Search party is almost to you, folks, and they have a medic with them. We will be able to carry you home. Get you patched up, welcome the Dustcap. Figure out what’s up with that woman Andrea. SO much to do. (Sighs) I could use a rest myself.

JAXON:

No, Sketchy. Stay on the mic with us until we get back. Please.

SKETCHY: (Voice tight)

Not going anywhere, buddy. I got you.

JAXON:

Also my mom’s going to kill me.

SKETCHY:

You know there’s a pre-storm movie that might be able to help you out here. And you, my friends are a captive audience so get comfy.

JAXON: (Exaggerating)

Oh no, I’m passing out again…
